Vader Tour of Duty
For the X-Wing program

(c) 1996, Mark and Derek Shenefelt

INTRODUCTION: Here's a new 12-mission tour of duty for X-Wing fans. Yes, we have Tie Fighter, and soon X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, but X-Wing still remains a great game. So, what are you waiting for, pilot? Get to your ship!

STORY: You get a lot of briefing text in this TOD because there's a story thread to the sequence of missions, just as there should be in any true X-Wing experience.
The Alliance is tired of getting kicked around by the Emperor and his top henchman, Darth Vader. Scoring an intelligence break with vital information from a pirate called "The Butcher," Alliance forces mount a campaign to damage Empire forces' confidence in the iron effectiveness of Vader. It's a risky campaign, taking on Empire legions closely arrayed in a sector overseen by Vader, but we'll never win the rebellion unless we use such daring strategies.

MISSIONS

Op 1: Escort pirate. Protect "the Butcher" as he enters Alliance hands to spill vital intelligence about the Empire in this sector.

Op 2: Stop ambush. Acting on a tip, X-W Red hypers in early to stop an Empire ambush of a CRS.

Op 3: Kill Vader's cousin! It's another hot tip from the Butcher. We take a shot at Mordra, Darth Vader's evil cousin, who runs the Empire's notorious torture/interrogation camps.

Op 4: Destroy depot. Imperial overconfidence comes in handy again. We hyper in to destroy an unguarded shield repair depot.

Op 5: Disrupt COMM site. Here's out chance to make a mess of Imperial communications in the sector.

Op 6: Inspect containers to find new spy electronics.

Op 7: Fend off Imperial counterattack against our CRS fleet.

Op 8: Escort pilot rescue mission after ion storm.

Op 9: Attack reinforcements in transit.

Op 10: Destroy Vader's primary STD fleet.

Op 11: Get Vader! Go after his STD and FRG escorts.

Op 12: Destroy the Empire's torture outpost.

HOW TO RUN IT: If you have the disk version of X-Wing: MAKE BACKUP COPIES OF THE GAME'S ORIGINAL TOUR I BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE! Then move the xwi and brf files from this game into your X-Wing directory to replace them. If you have the CD version of X-Wing: Download the XCD program from the Internet. It's a great little utility that allows you to run homemade missions on the X-Wing CD. After installing XCD according to its creator's specifications, install a MISSION directory on your root drive, then move all the Vader TOD xwi and brf files into that directory. Then run the game according to the instructions under the XCD program. We recommend these Tour I missions be played in the Historical Missions area.

TECHNICAL: The Vader TOD was created on a 486-66. Some slowdown occurs during certain situations in missions with a lot of capital ships, but otherwise it runs great. We would imagine 386s would have few problems, and Pentium users have no worries at all.

DIFFICULTY: This TOD has an overall difficulty scale of low to moderate. About half of the missions are fairly easy, two or three are quite challenging, and one or two can be really nasty (you'll know which ones they are when you get there).

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: This TOD of course would not be possible without LucasArts' great game, X-Wing. The author of this TOD makes no claim infringing upon LucasArts' well-established rights with this program. The authors also greatly appreciate the XMB mission builder program by Neal Westfall. His rights also are fully recognized.
